| [1] ‘gripes' - ditches [2] the beggar was paid one penny. [3] he notes paying an old soldier beggar one shilling. [4] W. - presumably being a ‘winnow' [5] Bison is the colloquial name for Bishopstone and the name usually used in the diary. [6] The Batcock's were Morgan's immediate neighbours to the west side of Caie Forgan. [7] Ordnance Survey - ‘Saithpren', about 1 mile north east of Llanegwad. [8] Ordnance Survey - ‘Llwchgwyn', close to Abercothi and Llanegwad. [9] The baby was born October 21st, 1836. [10] ‘Cley' - this must be Cockley Cley, a little to the south west of Swaffham. [11] Presumably the Rev. William Dalton. [12] The King died on the 20th. [13] margin note reads: Mr Montague called, met Mr Pillans, went with him to wash dogs and see potato crop. [14] Trifolium Incarnatum - Crimson Clover [15] Necton was a neighbouring village [16] CEM - Charles Edward Morgan - the baby. [17] Susan Cornish was a local girl and realised that she was expected to leave with the Morgans for Wales. [18] high sheriff.... This appears to be an interpolation. [19] an into a Polish and her reads - In travelling on Thursday next observe harvest going on about New Market etc rapidly. [20] Probably Llangennith - this confusion was not uncommon at the time. [21] He did not speak for 9 days and Dr Howel abandoned hope for his recovery. See A Gower Family by Robert Lucas, page 52. [22] Mrs McMeehan, widow of Captain McMeehan, R.N. [23] I G - I Grant [24] ‘found afterwards' is a visible interpolation as also on the entry for the 21st. [25] Later entries show that Morgan's servants were a prey to the attentions of local young men, particularly the Batcocks, his immediate neighbours. This may be related to the comment of the 19th. [26] Morgan means Llangennith, this seems to be a frequent confusion. [27] ‘Farm' was the name of a farm near Llanmorlais in the Upper Division, Samuel Eaton was the farmer.
